People & Houses
Sonu & Eva, 1995
Before 'barefoot luxury' was a category, it was a couple and an island in Baa. Thirty-one years later the phrase is on every mood board. The house is not.
In 1995 Sonu Shivdasani and Eva Malmström opened Soneva Fushi on a jungle island in Baa Atoll. The Library files them as LHL-P-017, a pair. That is the correct unit. The house was not a logo placed on a reef. It was two people deciding that luxury in the atolls could mean no shoes, no news, and a sand floor that was not a metaphor.
They did not invent the private island. Kurumba had been taking guests since 1972. They invented the sentence the private island would have to live up to: that the absence of formality was not a lack of standard. Every resort that now advertises 'barefoot' is quoting them, usually without knowing it.
What the register actually holds
Soneva Fushi, Baa, 1995. Soneva Jani, Noonu, 2015. Soneva Secret, Makunudhoo, 2024. A yacht that is filed as a house because it sells nights. In 2011, after the law changed, Soneva sold the first leasehold residence in the Maldives. That is the year the atolls stopped being only hotels and became a property class. KSL Capital arrived in 2025. The pair remain the authors. The capital is the binding.
They did not invent the private island. They invented the sentence the private island would have to live up to.
Condé Nast will tell you Soneva Secret is the most honest reading of the brand yet. That may be true. It is also a review. Our interest is narrower. A method that can open a fourth island without becoming a chain is rare. A method that can survive private equity without writing 'barefoot' into a brand book as a font is rarer. We will watch the residences. Residences are how a philosophy becomes a yield.
How to stay in the original
Fushi is still the one to book if you want the argument, not the photograph of the overwater pool. Jani is the postcard. Secret is the closing of the circle — fourteen keys, Makunudhoo, a seaplane that makes the transfer part of the plot. Do not collect them. One is a stay. Three is a tour of a company.
