Houses

The beach is the house

Nine kilometres of protected sand, hawksbill turtles, and a masterplan that keeps the buildings low. The six flags are tenants. The shoreline is the product Dubai does not have.

The house, on this island, is the beach. Nine kilometres, natural, protected, soft and white, with hawksbill turtles nesting on it. TDIC's plan holds the buildings low. That is the sentence the Office keeps repeating, and it is the one that separates this shore from every other beach in the emirates. Dubai did not keep a shoreline like this. The spectacle was built instead. If you wanted the spectacle, the Office sends you to Atlantis, across the border. It is not an insult. It is a classification.

Six flags stand on the sand: St. Regis, Park Hyatt, Rixos, Jumeirah, Rotana, Nobu. The briefs we are writing from do not give them keys, and they do not give them a hierarchy of silence. We will not invent either. What they share is the plan. What they do not share is a kitchen and a club. Choose the flag for the dining room and the children, not because one of them owns a private sea. None of them does. The sea in front of them is the protected one.

How to use a tenant

Book the beach in the month the rate is still shy of February, and book the flag whose club you will actually sit in. Families are not a compromise here. The Office lists them as people the island suits: calm water, the turtle patrol, a children's club at every flag. The person it does not suit is the one who thinks a beach club should become a night. This shore is in bed before that argument starts. Summer is a different product again — hot, priced for it, and useful mostly to residents and to anyone who came for the museums with the air conditioning on.

The last line

The desk can ask. It cannot invent a door.

Where the house is open, that is the official rate and the privileges that house actually honours. Where it is not open, the answer is that it is not open. Miles and status are not a promise on a project with no reservations.
