The house is the town
Dar Tantora is about thirty rooms inside the mud brick of the Old Town. The Office calls the fabric eight centuries old. It is the only stay in AlUla where the building is the archaeology.
Dar Tantora is filed by the Library as LHL-H-603 and described by the Office as about thirty rooms inside restored mud-brick houses in the Old Town, fabric the Office dates at eight hundred years. A second phase, into the neighbouring blocks, is on the 2026 list: courtyard suites, a hammam, a kitchen that is meant to be Saudi rather than a brand's repertoire from somewhere else. The sentence that matters is the Office's: this is the only hotel in AlUla where the building itself is the archaeology.
That is a different claim from the canyon. Habitas was manufactured off site and assembled in modules on the floor of Ashar — ninety-six suites in the Library's count, thirty-three Celestial, twenty-four Alcove, thirty-nine Canyon, plus twenty-two Airstreams added in March 2022. Two of the suites were moved so that a plant could stay. Banyan Tree opened on the twenty-third of October 2022 as the first internationally branded five-star house in the district: the Library files seventy-nine tented villas, about fifteen kilometres from the tombs, with Saffron, which is the group's Thai room, and a spa that belongs to the brand before it belongs to the valley. The Office's rate ladder prices those tents from nine hundred to fourteen hundred dollars, and in one table counts forty-seven villas. We book the Library's door. The Thai repertoire is the caveat the Library already wrote: this house was not assembled for a guest who wants a kitchen built around this place.
The station is not the town
The Chedi Hegra, thirty-five rooms, opened in December 2024 under GHM, using what remained of the Hegra railway station and other structures already on the ground. It is the stay that puts you nearest the necropolis. It is not Dar Tantora. One is a town you sleep inside. The other is a station and a set of villas at the edge of a ticketed site. Pair the Old Town with a dawn slot at Hegra. Do not expect the tombs to be the view from the bed, and do not expect the mud brick to behave like a resort. There is no canyon pool. That is why you are here.
