The Calendar
The only reason to go when the rate is honest
June to November, Baa Atoll. The water is less photogenic. The animals are not. This is the calendar the houses cannot invent.
December to April is the season the atolls sell. Blue, dry, full, expensive. May to September is the season they discount, then describe as 'lush'. What they do not print is that Baa Atoll's manta season runs June to November, on Hanifaru and the waters the UNESCO file actually protects. The animal is the only cultural occasion the Maldives has that is not a house's own firework.
Festival CodeX classifies reasons to travel. A manta aggregation is not a palio. It is closer to a harvest: it happens without a committee, it cannot be moved, and the houses either sit next to it or they do not. Four Seasons Landaa Giraavaru and Soneva Fushi are next to it. A villa in South Malé is not. Flying to the wrong atoll in July because the rate was pretty is how you spend a monsoon looking at a pool.
The three windows, used properly
Value, May to September: half the December quote on a buyout, manta in Baa, some rain, empty jetties. Shoulder, October to November: the water clears, the animal is still there, the European school holidays have not yet arrived. Peak, December to April: you are paying for certainty of sky. If certainty of sky is the product you want, pay it. Do not pay it and then complain that every house is full. That is the product.
Shoulder-season buyouts cost half the December quote.
Book Baa nine to twelve months out for the houses that still have a dusk seaplane. Book South Malé three months out if you are coming in February and will not risk the hub. Do not book 'the Maldives in summer' as if it were one weather. Name the atoll. Then look at the sky.
